Australia’s bid to end a 45-year sporting drought remains in the balance, with the Fed Cup final against France tied at 2-2 with one match to come.

Day two of the final began at Perth Arena with the two teams level at 1-1 — but the French took the lead, when world number one Ash Barty was beaten by France’s Kristina Mladenovic in three sets.

Then Fed Cup debutant Ajla Tomljanovic bounced back from a big loss on day one to defeat Pauline Parmentier in straight sets to level the final once more.

The result of the final will now come down to the final doubles rubber, with Australia seeking a first Fed Cup title since 1974.

More to come.
