Australia thumps Pakistan in Adelaide to complete 2-0 Test series sweep

Australia has completed a clean sweep of Pakistan in their two-Test series, wrapping up another victory by more than an innings at Adelaide Oval.

The second win, by an innings and 48 runs, came hot on the heels of their win by an innings and five runs at the Gabba to start the series.

Despite the decisive double demolition job, Pakistan’s resistance in the second innings of both Tests have frustrated Australia’s bowlers, and threatened to do so again on Monday, before Nathan Lyon (5-69) struck five times at one of his favourite hunting grounds.

Australia arrived at the ground hoping for a quick conclusion to another innings victory but, as they have made a habit of doing across these two Tests, the Pakistanis forced the bowlers to work for it.

Shaan Masood and Asad Shafiq infuriated the Australian bowlers for the first hour-and-a-half, before the breakthrough came seemingly out of nowhere when Shaan (68) shuffled down the pitch and chipped Nathan Lyon straight to mid-off.

Any hopes of a rapid collapse were thwarted as Asad (57) carried on his merry way to his second half-century of the series, but Lyon brought about his end as well when he prodded a ball off his hip and into the hands of David Warner at leg slip.

Iftikhar Ahmed and Muhammad Rizwan went about resuming the resistance and lasted almost 20 overs before Iftikhar (27) prodded forward to glove a ball to Marnus Labuschagne at short leg, who pouched a sharp chance after a rough couple of days in the field.

That brought to the crease Yasir Shah, who frustrated the Australians to the tune of 113 runs off 213 balls on Sunday, despite a career average in the low teens.

But he fell 100 runs short of his first-innings score, trapped LBW by Lyon for his fourth wicket of the day, with Pakistan still 66 runs away from making Australia bat again.

Shaheen Afridi (1) played some aggressive strokes in a brief stay before holing out to Lyon, as the off-spinner notched his fourth five-wicket haul in nine Tests on the pitch that he once cared for as a groundskeeper.

The dinner break brought with it a night session and a brand new ball, which Josh Hazlewood used to send Rizwan’s (45) bails flying.

Teenager Musa Khan was not expected to last long at the crease, but managed to survive five balls, only to see Mohammad Abbas try to sneak a single off the last ball of the over. Musa sent him back, but Pat Cummins had plenty of time to gather the ball at mid-on and throw down the stumps to end the comprehensive victory.

Next on the docket for Australia is a three-Test series against New Zealand, which kicks off at Perth Stadium next Thursday.
