Body found under Gold Coast bridge thought to be missing ‘bikie’ Shane Ross

Police believe a body found in a Gold Coast park is that of alleged bikie Shane Ross, who was reported missing in the aftermath of a fatal traffic crash on Friday night.

Key points:

  • Police are treating the death as suspicious
  • Shane Ross was last seen drinking with a friend on Friday night hours before the friend died in a car crash
  • Police have spoken to Mr Ross’s family but have not yet formally identified the body

Mr Ross, thought to have been a member of the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle club, was found dead by a friend under a bridge in Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast on Monday afternoon.

The body was found about one kilometre away from where his friend and business partner died in the single-vehicle crash on Tallebudgera Creek Road on Friday, when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

Superintendent Brendan Smith said Mr Ross was not in the car at the time of the crash.

“Obviously some sort of altercation has occurred and as a result this male person is now deceased,” he said.

“We are treating [the latest death] as suspicious,” Superintendent Smith said.

Police are yet to formally identify the body, but have spoken to Mr Ross’s family.

Friend Sam Shephard posted a tribute to Mr Ross on social media, saying he would be “incredibly missed”.

“I’m so sorry for the things that had happened and how things have ended for such a beautiful soul,” Mr Shephard said.

“He was a great man, better friend, he was a gentlemen, a great gentleman, he would always give you the time of day no matter what.”

“Injuries to the deceased would indicate that it’s not natural causes,” Superintendent Smith said.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the local area here — particularly people with dashcam or who may have been walking their dog or whatever across the bridge.”

‘Tragic set of circumstances’

Superintendent Smith said they were still investigating the link between the crash and the discovery of what they believe to be the body of Mr Ross.

“They were seen together on Friday, so obviously that’s one line of inquiry that we’re going to run out,” he said.

He said it would be an unusual coincidence if the two deaths were not connected.

Superintendent Smith said the pair were last seen drinking together at a licensed venue in Pimpama.

“It’s a tragic set of circumstances and we would like to get to as to how it happened as soon as possible,” he said.

“Certainly by the injuries, it was not a self-inflicted death.

“A friend of the deceased located the person this afternoon and contacted police … how he found out is still a matter of investigation.”

Superintendent Smith said at this stage no weapons were discovered near the scene, and he would not be drawn on what injuries Mr Ross had suffered.

A crime scene has been established at the bridge where the body was found.
