Actor and comedian Kevin Hart has been injured in the crash of a vintage muscle car in the hills above Malibu, US.

Key points:

  • Hart and his driver were taken to hospital with “major back injuries”
  • The driver and a female passenger were pinned in the car, local reports say
  • A Californian Highway Patrol report says the driver was not under the influence of alcohol

A California Highway Patrol collision report says 40-year-old Hart was a passenger his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda that went off Mulholland Highway and rolled down an embankment around 12:45 am on Sunday, local time.

The report says Hart and the driver, 28-year-old Jared Black, both suffered “major back injuries” and were taken to hospitals.

Another passenger, 31-year-old Rebecca Broxterman, only complained of pain.

The Highway Patrol report says Mr Back lost control of the car as it turned from a canyon road onto the highway.

TMZ, which first reported the crash, posted footage of emergency crews at the scene and photos of a severely damaged car.

Police told the US outlet Mr Black and Ms Broxterman were pinned in their seats until firefighters cut the crushed roof from the vehicle.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Mr Hart “left the scene to his nearby residence to get medical attention” before he was taken to hospital.

California Highway Patrol says the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

Hart fans took to social media to wish the comedian a speedy recovery.

A representative for Hart did not immediately reply to messages.

Hart was slated to host the Oscars earlier this year, however, stepped down from the role after his past homophobic tweets resurfaced.

Hart said he was told to apologise for the tweets but chose not to, saying he’d addressed the comments “several times” before.

His decision to pass up the hosting gig resulted in the Academy Awards going without a host for the second time in the ceremony’s history.
