Victorian batsman Nic Maddinson has become the latest Australian cricketer to take a break from the game to deal with mental health issues.

Key points:

  • Nic Maddinson, 27, has played three Tests for Australia, the last in 2016
  • The NSW native moved to Victoria in 2018, and has averaged 79.3 in Shield cricket for the Bushrangers
  • He is the second cricketer in a fortnight to take a mental health break from cricket

He was due to play in the three-day, three-night match against the touring Pakistan side at Perth Stadium starting on Monday.

However, Cricket Australia released a statement on Saturday saying it supported Maddinson’s decision to withdraw from the game to look after his mental health.

Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s executive general manager of national teams, said Maddinson would be given all the time and support he needed to return to full health.

“The wellbeing of our players is always our primary concern,” Oliver said.

“We are proud that our players are comfortable to speak honestly and openly about how they are feeling.

“We will provide Nic with all the support and care we can and wish him a full and speedy recovery. We also ask that Nic’s privacy be respected at this time.”

Maddinson will be replaced in the Australia A XI by Cameron Bancroft.

Maddinson scored 224 for the Bushrangers against South Australia last month, and is averaging 66.17 this season.

He has played three Tests for Australia, the last against Pakistan at the MCG in 2016.

Graeme Hick, Australia A’s coach for the match against Pakistan, said the entire Australian cricket family was thinking of Maddinson.

“Nic has made the right decision and we are all behind him,” Hick said.

“It is braver to speak up than to suffer in silence and I applaud Nic for having the courage to put his health first.

“While saddened to see Nic stand down, we welcome Cam Bancroft to the Australia A XI.

“Cam is obviously no stranger to quality international bowling and the Perth Stadium wicket. We have no doubt he will fit well into the team.”

Late last month Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell pulled out of the T20 squad for series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan to deal with a mental health issue.
