Odessa Residents Leave Messages of Love and Solidarity at Vigil for Mass Shooting Victims

Residents of Odessa attended a vigil at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on September 1, remembering the victims of a mass shooting in the city the day before. A number of people wrote messages of hope on the ground where the vigil took place. At the time of the vigil, the death toll from the shooting stood at seven, with 22 others injured. The gunman was also killed. Police said that Seth Aaron Ator, 36, was stopped by an officer while travelling on the I-20 highway between Midland and Odessa. He opened fire on the officer before fleeing westbound along the highway. He shot at a civilian near east Loop 338, according to police, before stealing a mail carrier truck and continuing to shoot “at innocent civilians all over Odessa.” Credit: Trey Biskup via Storyful
