A man has been found dead inside a vehicle at the scene of a shooting on a tollway in Melbourne’s east this morning.

Key points:

  • Police have not confirmed the man’s exact cause of death
  • Two vehicles dumped at separate locations nearby may be linked to the shooting
  • Investigators closed EastLink lanes to traffic as they investigated the scene

Emergency services were called to reports a vehicle had spun out and was blocking inbound lanes on the EastLink at Donvale at about 2:20am.

Police said the man was found dead and was the only person inside the vehicle, but the exact circumstances of his death were not clear.

Footage from the scene showed a white van stationary towards the right lanes of the tollway.

Investigators closed the EastLink to city-bound traffic between the Maroondah Highway and Springvale Road as they investigated the death.

In a statement, police said they were investigating whether two abandoned vehicles in the nearby suburbs of Mooroolbark and Bayswater were linked to the shooting.
