Principal Lawyers – $137,817.00 to $146,076.00

Duties Principal Lawyers are part of the ACCC’s in-house legal practice. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel of the relevant unit, the Principal Lawyer is responsible for providing and overseeing legal advice (including strategic and legal policy advice) and other legal services in relation to: – the ACCC’s functions and powers under the Competition and Consumer Act (including Part IV, the Australian Consumer Law and/or Part VII) and other legislation relevant to the ACCC’s operations; – Court proceedings involving the ACCC. To undertake this role, you must have been admitted to practice as an Australian legal practitioner of an Australian State or Territory. In providing legal advice the Principal Lawyer will be acting independently of instructions from the Chairman, other Commissioners, AER Board members and managers outside the Legal Group and in litigation matters your primary duty is to the Court. Working under limited direction, the Principal Lawyer will: 1. provide legal (including strategic and legal policy) advice on complex issues relating to the functions and powers of the ACCC under the Competition and Consumer Act (including Part IV, the Australian Consumer Law and/or Part VII); 2. conduct legal and related research into complex matters relevant to ACCC responsibilities under relevant legislation; 3. assist with the conduct of investigations and Court and/or Tribunal proceedings for the ACCC, including working closely with external lawyers; 4. assist the ACCC in the performance of its dispute resolution functions; 5. draft and / or settle complex court documents (including pleadings and submissions), s.155 notices, s.87B undertakings and other legal documents in support of investigations and litigation; 6. provide legal input for publications and information programs; 7. develop and maintain professional relationships at all levels within the ACCC to assist the Legal Group to provide responsive client service; 8. work closely with the relevant ACCC line area staff; 9. provide leadership, guidance, and supervision of members of the relevant unit as required; 10. assist Deputy General Counsel, Special Counsel and General Counsel as required.
