Democratic rising political star Pete Buttigieg says it’s likely that if elected he wouldn’t be America’s first gay president. Speaking with HBO, the 37-year-old says ‘statistically almost certain’ that America has already had a gay commander in chief. Mr Buttigieg, who shot to political prominence earlier this year after a public stoush with Vice President Mike Pence, would be the first openly gay presidential candidate in history. He rejects claims he is ‘too young, too liberal and too gay’ to claim victory against Donald Trump in 2020, saying Americans are focussed on the issues. The comments come as Mr Buttigieg and other Democrat nominees prepare for next week’s first Presidential debate.
