Two men have suffered “serious injuries” after being shot by Victorian police at Barnawartha North near the New South Wales border.

Police said the shootings happened when they tried to stop a car on Old Barnawartha Road near Richardsons Bend camping ground on the Murray River about 3:00pm.

In a statement, police said both had men sustained “serious injuries” and had been taken to hospital.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were still being established.

They said there was no threat to the community.

“At this stage the investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided once it comes to hand,” the statement said.
