A man and a woman have died in South Australia’s north in what police say is a suspected hit-and-run.

Officers say the pedestrians were hit by a grey or silver Toyota SUV on Caroona Road in Port Augusta West about 2:20am.

The vehicle then drove away.

It is unclear whether the two people, a 50-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both of Port Augusta West, were deliberately hit.

They died at the scene.

Major Crash officers are investigating the scene.

Caroona Road is closed between Hartley Street and Addison Road.

Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone who has seen a vehicle with significant front-end damage in the area matching the description has been asked to contact police immediately.
